Emergency Plumbing Checklist: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes of a Burst Pipe or Sewage Backup

Minutes Matter: Stop Water Flow Before Structural Damage Escalates

When a pipe bursts under pressure, over 10 gallons of water per minute can pour into your living room, ceiling, or crawl space. Following these immediate steps in the first 10 minutes protects your family and saves thousands in restoration costs.

Step 1: Shut Off the Main Water Supply

Do not waste time searching for the specific leaking pipe. Go straight to your main water shutoff valve:

  • Main Valve Location: Usually located in the basement, crawl space entrance, or inside the garage near the main water line entry.
  • Valve Type: Turn lever handles 90 degrees until perpendicular to the pipe, or turn round wheel handles clockwise until fully tight.
  • Water Meter Pit: If the indoor valve fails, use a curb key to turn the valve inside your outdoor city water meter box.

Step 2: Turn Off Electrical Power to Affected Rooms

If water is pooling near floor outlets, appliances, or light fixtures, do not step into standing water. Go to your electrical panel and switch off circuit breakers serving those zones.

Step 3: Relieve Trapped Line Pressure

Open outdoor hose bibbs and lowest-level sink faucets to drain residual water trapped inside your supply lines into a basin rather than through the burst pipe split.

Step 4: Document the Damage for Insurance

Before wiping up water, take clear photos and videos showing affected furniture, drywalls, and flooring. Keep all damaged pipe sections for insurance inspector verification.
