Why Sediment Accumulates in Tank Water Heaters
As cold water enters your water heater tank, minerals settle at the bottom. Over time, a thick layer of sand-like mineral sediment forms over gas burner assemblies or lower electric heating elements. This causes rumbling noises and forces the system to work twice as hard to heat water.
Step-by-Step Tank Flushing Instructions
- Turn Off Heating Source: Switch off the electric breaker or turn gas control knob to “PILOT”.
- Shut Off Cold Water Entry: Turn the cold water shutoff valve at the top of the heater clockwise.
- Attach Garden Hose: Thread a heavy-duty garden hose to the bottom drain valve and run the open end out to a floor drain or outdoor lawn area.
- Open Hot Water Faucet: Open a hot water faucet inside a sink upstairs to break the vacuum.
- Open Drain Valve: Carefully open the drain valve and let cloudy sediment water flow out.
- Flush Clean: Open the cold water supply valve in short bursts to wash remaining sediment off the tank floor until water flows crystal clear.
